With the Current
Curated by Hannah Day
We’re looking to catch a glimpse of what island artists are creating in their studios across the islands of Maine. With the Current is a group exhibition dedicated to showcasing the diverse, thoughtful, and inspired works coming from Maine’s island communities.
Who Can Submit:
Artists living or working on any of Maine’s islands — all disciplines and mediums welcome.
If you grew up year round on an island in Maine, or have significant ties that still inform your practice, you are still welcome to apply!
What We’re Looking For:
Work that reflects your current creative practice. There’s no strict theme — we’re interested in seeing what’s happening now in your studio, however that looks. Artists are allowed to submit up to 3 pieces but only 1 piece is required for consideration
Our memories of home often play like imagined scenes—part dream, part truth—securely tucked away in the mind’s quiet corners. Nostalgia has a strange, mystical ability to transport us, collapsing time and space in an instant. It becomes a form of time travel if we’re willing to follow.
The idea of home is not fixed; it shifts as we move through life. Photographs—both personal and inherited—can anchor us to those feelings or, just as powerfully, disrupt what we thought we remembered.
For Mystics of Home, I am interested in photographs that explore the ephemeral, the unnerving, and the spiritually resonant aspects of home, both past and present. I'm drawn to what feels rooted in mystical realism: images where the real and the surreal coexist, where the unseen forces that shape how we remember, how we long, and how we define where we come from are subtly revealed.
